Flamingo Gardens – An old Florida Hidden Gem

Are you looking for something to do that is family friendly and does not cost you an arm and a leg. Then you might want to consider Flamingo Gardens in Davie Florida. I had a chance to spend an afternoon with my family and we have lots of fun, from the Wildlife Encounter Shows, Narrated Tram Tours, Botanical Gardens, Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary, Museum, and well stocked Gift Shop.

WILDLIFE ENCOUNTER SHOWS

We headed right away to the live presentations featuring several of Florida’s native wildlife, such as birds of prey, small mammals, and reptiles, with interesting facts about the species and their relationship to the environment. These shows are presented daily at 11:30, 1:30, and 2:30 weather permitting. My 4 year old daughter lost interest here after awhile but my wife and I enjoyed it.

NARRATED TRAM TOURS

We took the narrated tram ride through the back 46 acres consisting of a mitigated tropical rainforest, wetlands area, and a native hammock including some of the last natural jungle growth in South Florida. The tour is fully narrated, lasting approximately 25 minutes, leaving every thirty minutes from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, seven days a week, weather permitting. This was the last activity we took and after a hot day the cool breeze from the drive was appreciated. We love seeing all the natural tropical plants and trees.

BOTANICAL GARDENS

The Wray Botanical Collection and Arboretum at Flamingo Gardens consists of 15 acres with over 3000 tropical and sub-topical plants and trees. The Arboretum is home to 18 “Champion” trees, the largest trees of their species as designated by the Florida Forest Service, including the largest single-trunk tree in the Florida. Specialty gardens include the Croton Garden, Butterfly Garden, Hummingbird Garden, Florida Wildflower Garden, Bromeliad Garden, and Children’s Garden. You won’t believe all the amazing and huge trees to explore and take photos of the family.

EVERGLADES WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary at Flamingo Gardens provides residence to permanently injured and non-releasable birds and animals. It has the distinction of being the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the State with over 85 native species including alligators, bobcats, panthers, otters, eagles, peacocks and, of course flamingos. It also contains one of the largest free-flight aviaries in the country and one of the premiere River Otter breeding programs.  The animals seemed like they were well care for and my daughter really enjoyed them.

WRAY HOME MUSEUM

The centerpiece of the gardens is a natural hammock of 200 year-old Live Oak trees dripping with species orchids and epiphytes. Amid the trees is the historic Wray Home Museum, built in 1933 by Floyd L. and Jane Wray as a weekend retreat. It is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive. The building was restored in 1991 to depict a typical South Florida country home of the 1930’s and is open to the public with guided tours from 10:00am to 5:00pm seven days a week.

So if you are looking for an attraction that has stood the test of time, then you need to come to Flamingo Gardens.

Have a Wild Time with Some Pretty Awesome Birds

Florida Wild Bird Sanctuary

Florida Wild Bird Sanctuary

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center is on a mission, and that is to rescue, rehabilitate and release native and migratory birds that have been harmed or displaced, as well as to provide a humane shelter for those birds not able to be released. The Center also educates the public on the importance of respecting all wild bird species. Time spent at the FKWBC is both thrilling and rewarding as you’re able to get up close to some of the most beautiful and interesting birds like ospreys, frigatebirds, laughing gulls, pelicans, screech owls, great white herons and double crested cormorants.

As Close to Flying as You’ll Ever Get

Speaking of birds, get a bird’s eye view of the beautiful ocean, and maybe even see some dolphins frolicking offshore, as you soar high above on your solo or tandem parasailing adventure. Head to Caribbean Watersports which offers some of the best sky-soaring flights available in the Keys. The company has been in business for over 20 years and their captains are PAPO certified. And the best part is, you take off in the boat… you land in the boat, so you never have to get wet. This is good for those of you with hairdos that cringe at the very sight of water.

With so much natural beauty and so many incredible attractions available, you’ll find leaving this slice of paradise harder than you thought.

Snorkeling in Key Largo John Pennekamp State Park

John Pennekamp turns 50 and celebrates all the wonders of this amazing state park in the Florida Keys. I discovered this park in 1980 when I came to go scuba diving on its many reefs. Now that the park is turning 50, it looks as good now as it did way back when. The park has so much to do that we wrote a story on the park and all it has to offer, from snorkeling, which many people do, glass bottom boat rides, beaches, camping, and so much more.

To celebrate the 50 years, I am sure you have a John Pennekamp story to share? We would love to hear from you.

It has been years since I was at Lion Country Safari but this time I took my wife to see the park and the safari. She wrote a review of our day at Lion Country Safari. Read her review here, Lion Country Safari West Palm Beach Attraction.

Mrs Macs Kitchen Review Key Largo

Key Largo has many choices to eat and drink but one of my favorite places to go is Mrs Macs Kitchen in Key Largo. You may get fooled by looking at the building on the outside but you will know the food is really good and tasty because of the crowds for lunch and dinner.  Its worth the wait because the menue selection is really big and varied from delicious sandwiches, fresh fish, and angus steaks. Plus the service is really friendly too.

Blowing Rocks Preserve Jupiter Island

A person emailed me about Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island Florida and it has been a long time since I have been there.  Its a great place to watch nature at work, with blowing and slashing water.

The preserve was named for its rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline – the largest on the U.S. Atlantic coast. During extreme high tides and after winter and summer storms, seas break against the rocks and force plumes of saltwater up to 50 feet skyward. It’s an impressive sight.

Here is video to see the waves in action.

Here is little map of where the location is:

Its not a great place to go swimming because the rocks can be quit dangerous, so keep that in mind. Any feed back from any of you out there?

Johnny
