Before 1000 BC, Costa Rica was a trading route between the southern Andean empires, and the northern Mesoamerican empires. Archaeological excavations have revealed trade goods, pottery, and jade reflecting the presence of both cultures. Spaniards were the first known people to settle in Costa Rica.
